GATE 2014: How to prepare for General Aptitude
Your common companion through your journey to GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2014 is the General Aptitude section. The GA section is designed to test your language and analytical skills. Regardless of which optional subject you may choose, General Aptitude remains constant in each and every one of the 22 optional papers. Although General Aptitude seems easy, a little smart studying always helps. Here are some tips!
Paper PatternThe General Aptitude section is worth 15 marks and consists of 10 questions; 5 questions carrying 1 mark each and 5 questions for 2 marks each. The General Aptitude question pattern remains the same for all subjects
Part 1: Verbal Ability: English Grammar, Sentence Completion, Verbal Analogies, Word
Groups, Instructions, Critical Reasoning and Verbal Deduction.
Part 2: Numerical Ability: Numerical Computation, Numerical Estimation, Numerical
Reasoning and Data Interpretation.

TIPS- It is easy to score in the Hotel Management JEE but its important to score high
- English language has maximum number of questions so its important to study English even if your language skills are good
- Revise English grammar focusing on Class 10th and Class 12th
- Increase your vocabulary drastically and pay attention to spellings as questions do come to identify correct/incorrect spellings
- Other important topics in English include one word substitutions, finding errors and reading comprehension
- Use advanced level vocabulary books and basic grammar books
- For numerical ability and scientific aptitude study basic concepts from NCERT Class 10 books
- Select reference books/ question books carefully so you do not end up studying more than required
- If you have been out of touch with Maths then you should practice calculations and approximation techniques
- Practice puzzles for reasoning and logical deduction section
- Read current affairs regularly to prepare for General knowledge section and to improve vocabulary
- Don't limit your general knowledge preparation to only 1 year as older important events may also be asked
- If you are not sure of a question in any topic apart from aptitude for service sector then skip as negative marks are applicable
- Aptitude for Service sector requires no real preparation, on the spot logical thinking will help you clear the section
